A detailed guide to building interval sessions, operating the stopwatch, recording finishers, using heart-rate data and managing your training history.
Quick start
Inside Edge Timing has two primary working areas: Intervals for planned work-and-recovery sessions, and Stopwatch for recording laps or race finish order. Select the mode that matches the task before the session begins.
Building an interval session
Start from a preset or build your own
Starter sessions provide a quick route into commonly useful structures. You can also create a session from individual named sets. Choose the activity category—Speed Skating, Strength, HIIT, Cycling, Running, Rehab/Mobility or Custom—to keep the session understandable in your history.
Configure each set
For every set, choose the number of rounds, the work duration and the recovery duration. Where a session has multiple sets, configure the inter-set recovery separately. This allows a single session to move through different training purposes without needing multiple independent timers.
Use beat patterns
Beat mode can be switched off or set to a steady, speeding-up or slowing-down pattern. Configure the relevant beat interval so audible timing can support rhythm, tempo or technical drills without requiring the athlete to watch the display.
Save reusable sessions
Give reusable structures recognisable names. Review every duration and set count before starting, particularly where athletes will respond to sound cues at speed.
Running a live session
The live view identifies the current set, interval, work or recovery phase, time remaining, beat instruction and total progress. Use Start or Pause to control the timer, Skip when the group needs to move forward and Reset when the current run should be abandoned and prepared again.
Full-screen mode reduces distraction and makes core timing information easier to read at a distance. Audio cues can be combined with haptics, or haptics can be used without a cue sound. Generated cues are designed to coexist with other device audio and may temporarily reduce its volume.
Keep iOS notification, volume, Focus and silent-mode behaviour in mind. Test the selected cue in the real venue before relying on it for a group session.
Using the stopwatch
Lap mode
Use Lap mode when you need successive splits and cumulative times. Start the clock, capture each athlete or lap as required, then pause or reset at the end. Each saved lap can include an editable note, making it possible to attach a name, lap number or coaching observation.
Finishers mode
Use Finishers mode when the order across the line matters. Each capture records the finishing position, total time and gap relative to the leader. Add an athlete name or bib number to each entry, together with competition, date and race-number information for context.
Review the order before sharing. Results can be shared as text using the standard iOS share sheet.
Connecting a heart-rate monitor
Inside Edge Timing supports monitors that broadcast the standard Bluetooth Heart Rate Service. Wake and wear the sensor, enable Bluetooth for the app in iOS Settings, then begin discovery from the heart-rate area. Keep the sensor close to the iPhone or iPad during connection.
When connected, live beats per minute and connection status are displayed. You can enter a lactate-threshold heart rate (LTHR) so the app can place the current reading into a relative training zone. This provides training context only and is not medical advice or a diagnosis.
If the monitor does not appear
- Confirm the sensor is awake, worn correctly and has sufficient battery.
- Disconnect it from another phone, watch, bike computer or app that may hold the connection.
- Check that Bluetooth permission is enabled for Inside Edge Timing.
- Move closer to the sensor, return to the connection screen and scan again.
- Restart the sensor or app if the Bluetooth connection remains unavailable.
Training history, effort and reports
Completed interval sessions are retained locally on the device, up to the app’s current history limit. Entries include date and time, activity category, elapsed training time and interval information. Completion detail helps distinguish completed, shortened or skipped parts of a set.
Add a perceived-effort rating from 1 to 10 and optional notes after training. Reports can then be shared through iOS. Sharing occurs only when you choose it, and the selected destination controls what happens to the exported content.
Troubleshooting
I cannot hear cues
Raise the device volume, check silent and Focus settings, confirm a cue sound is selected and test with the device close by. In a loud rink or training venue, haptics can supplement sound but should not be treated as a guaranteed safety signal.
The timer stopped when the app left the foreground
For the most reliable operation, keep Inside Edge Timing visible during an active session and prevent the device from being inadvertently locked or switched to another app.
A saved session or history entry has disappeared
App information is stored locally rather than in an Inside Edge Studios account. Deleting the app, clearing its data or moving to a new device without an applicable device backup can remove locally stored information.
What should I send to support?
Include your iPhone or iPad model, iOS/iPadOS version, Inside Edge Timing version, the mode you were using, and a concise sequence of what you expected and what happened. Screenshots are useful where they do not expose sensitive information.
